Adventist HealthCare Hospitals Earn National Recognition for Dedication to High-Quality Stroke and Heart Attack Care
Gaithersburg, Maryland – Adventist HealthCare’s two Montgomery County-based hospitals, Shady Grove Medical Center and White Oak Medical Center, have earned quality achievement awards from the American Heart Association for their commitment to best practices in rapid, life-saving stroke and heart attack care.
Both hospitals received the Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. To earn the recognition, the hospitals demonstrated their sustained dedication to treatment guidelines and educating patients to help them manage their recovery.
Additionally, both hospitals were recognized for their commitment to research-based care for people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, or NSTEMI. Each year, more than 546,000 people experience this type of dangerous heart attack, caused by a partial blockage of blood flow to the heart.
White Oak Medical Center earned the Get With The Guidelines® - Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold Award with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. Shady Grove Medical Center received the Get With The Guidelines® - Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Silver Award with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and stroke is the fifth leading cause. Someone suffers a stroke or heart attack every 40 seconds, the CDC notes. Timely detection of symptoms and rapid treatment is crucial to enhance survival rates, accelerate recovery times and improve long-term outcomes.
"Our continued recognition by the American Heart Association is a testament to the exceptional care our teams deliver every day," said Neil Roy, MD, chief medical officer, Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. "We are proud of the impact our stroke and cardiac programs have on our community's health and well-being."
"We are thrilled to be recognized by the American Heart Association,” said James Rost, MD, chief medical officer, Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center. “This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire White Oak team to delivering high-quality stroke care to ensure our patients have optimal outcomes."
The recognition carries on Adventist HealthCare’s decades-long tradition of excellence in cardiovascular care. White Oak Medical Center is credited with many local firsts in heart care, including the first heart bypass surgery, first carotid artery stent procedure and first comprehensive heart program in the Washington, D.C., region. Shady Grove Medical Center has earned distinction in stroke care. Shady Grove is the only Maryland hospital outside of the Baltimore area to hold The Joint Commission’s Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center certification for upholding rigorous standards in performing advanced stroke treatment and providing patients with post-procedure care.
