Adventist HealthCare Hospitals Once Again Earn National Recognition for High Quality Stroke Care

Gaithersburg, Maryland – Two Adventist HealthCare hospitals, Shady Grove Medical Center and White Oak Medical Center, each have received 2023 achievement awards from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA).

The hospitals earned Get with The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus awards and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition for demonstrating their commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for stroke treatment, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospitals.

Additionally, Shady Grove Medical Center earned Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll recognition for meeting criteria that reduces the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-busting medication alteplase.

The recognition continued a years-long streak of honors for Adventist HealthCare’s stroke teams in the Get with The Guidelines® program.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death in the U.S. On average, one American suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes. High-quality stroke care that follows the latest research-based guidelines ultimately leads to more lives saved.

To achieve the Get with The Guidelines® Gold Plus Achievement Award, both hospitals reached an aggressive goal of treating patients to AHA/ASA core standards of care for two consecutive calendar years or more. They also demonstrated compliance with an additional level of quality standards during a 24-month or greater period.

The hospitals earned Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll by also demonstrating compliance with the Get with The Guidelines® overall diabetes cardiovascular initiative composite score for 12 consecutive months.

Adventist HealthCare offers comprehensive stroke care, from advanced neurosurgical treatments that can improve long-term outcomes to award-winning rehabilitation services that guide patients through recovery. Also, Shady Grove Medical Center is the only Maryland hospital in the National Capital Region to hold The Joint Commission accreditation in mechanical thrombectomy, an advanced neurosurgical stroke treatment shown in studies to improve long-term outcomes in eligible patients.
