About Cary Brown
Cary Brown, MD, FACS is a board-certified general surgeon with The Adventist Medical Group. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. An Air Force officer since 1969, he completed a rotating internship at Keesler Air Force Base Hospital and finished his surgical residency training at South Baltimore General Hospital (now Harbor Hospital Center).
During his senior residency year, he participated in early hyperbaric research and published the results of a study related to diving accidents. He spent seven years at Patrick Air Force Base where he became the chief of General Surgery and participated in the development of emergency medical services for the Space Shuttle program. He transferred to Elmendorf AFB Regional Hospital, AK and served as chief of Surgical Services. He became involved in the Armed Services Combat Casualty Care training course as an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor and retired as a colonel in 1989.
After a brief term as an emergency room physician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, he joined a multispecialty group in Rockville and joined the surgical staff of Shady Grove Medical Center. He opened a solo surgical practice in 1996. During his tenure there he has served on the Utilization Review, Surgical Review and Cancer Committees, and was the General Surgical Subsection chairman for two years. He participated in the hospital's annual Cancer Screening Day from 1999 to 2012.
In 2003, the hospital opened its wound care center, and Dr. Brown accepted the position of Medical Director. He resigned the position in June 2012 and closed his surgical practice shortly thereafter. He became a Physician Advisor for Executive Health Resources and served in that capacity for a year before being asked to resume his position as Co-medical Director of the Wound and Hyperbaric Center.
