The Adventist HealthCare Germantown Emergency provides the same full-service emergency medical care that patients can receive at a hospital emergency department in a convenient, stand-alone location just west of I-270 across from the Germantown Town Center on Rt. 118. Patients who need to be admitted are transferred to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center or other area hospitals.

Emergency Center Facts

What type of facility is the Germantown Emergency Center?

The Adventist HealthCare Germantown Emergency Center functions similar to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center’s Emergency Department, but it does not have inpatient beds. Advanced technology closely links the facility with Shady Grove Medical Center. For example, the hospital’s Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS), which provides digital x-ray images, allows doctors at Shady Grove Medical Center to review images from patients at the Germantown Emergency Center.

State and county officials have worked closely with Shady Grove Medical Center to establish transport protocols for patients who come to the Emergency Center but require inpatient hospital care. The emergency center, which opened in 2006, was the first part of Adventist HealthCare’s network of comprehensive services in Germantown and the upper part of Montgomery County. These services now include:

Why is there a need for a freestanding emergency medical facility in Germantown?

The area that Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center serves includes residents in central and northern Montgomery County. In 2005, before the emergency center opened, Shady Grove Medical Center’s Emergency Department treated nearly 90,000 emergency patients. In fact, Shady Grove’s Emergency Department is consistently one of the busiest in the state and operates at a volume more than double the national standard for hospitals of its size. The Germantown Emergency Center has helped alleviate this pressure and reduced out-of-service ambulance times in upper Montgomery County by 40 percent, according to the county’s Fire and Rescue Service.

Adventist HealthCare has contracts with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service to pay for ambulance transports between the Germantown Emergency Center and local hospitals. The agreement reimburses the county’s Fire and Rescue Service and provides funding that allows the county to invest in its EMS fleet.

Where should I go if I need medical attention, but it’s not an emergency?

Adventist HealthCare has partnered with Patriot Urgent Care to provide high quality urgent care in the Germantown, Rockville and Laurel locations. These locations are great alternatives to the Germantown Emergency Center when you have a medical issue that needs prompt attention but is not an emergency. Urgent Care’s board-certified physicians are accessible seven days a week until 8 p.m. and can treat issues like broken bones, infections, allergies, pediatric concerns, stomach discomfort and much more. They also offer flu shots and COVID-19 testing and treatment.
