Benefits of Expansion

In November 2007, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital opened its new four-story tower, which added more than 207,000 square feet of space to the hospital. Another 52,000 square feet of space in the existing hospital will also be renovated by 2009. When the four-year project is complete, Shady Grove will have the capacity for 296 patient beds. Other exciting highlights and benefits include:

Modern Features that Enhance Quality and Safety

  • Patient care units in Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s new tower have been designed to enhance the quality care that is delivered to patients in the hospital.  These modern changes include decentralized nursing stations, which allow nursing staff to remain close to their patients at all times through small nursing stations positioned throughout the care units.  This change results in an innovative model of care, called relationship-based care, which improves patient and staff satisfaction.
  • Each patient room in Shady Grove’s new tower will feature a bed-side computer that will be used for documentation of clinical care at the patient’s bedside.  This improves accuracy and efficiency by ensuring immediate access to patient information for caregivers.

A Healing Environment for Patients and Families

  • Shady Grove’s new tower adds 144 private patient rooms to the hospital, increasing Shady Grove’s private patient rooms from 31 percent to 82 percent.
  • The private rooms in Shady Grove’s new tower will be 205 square feet—providing patients with more than double the space that they have in the hospital’s current semi-private rooms.
  • Forty-eight private rooms in the new tower will be dedicated to Shady Grove’s postpartum unit, providing larger and more personal space for new parents and babies to bond.  In these rooms, gas valves and other hospital equipment will be hidden behind moveable artwork to provide a “home” environment in the rooms.
  • All private rooms in Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s new tower will feature a full range of modern patient amenities, including a private bathroom, desk, and a recliner (gliders for postpartum rooms).
  • The new tower will feature free wireless internet access for patients and their visitors.
  • Patient care units in the new tower will include a family lounge that is equipped with a kitchen.  Families can use these kitchens to prepare homemade food for patients—providing patients with an important reminder of home.
  • Some units in the new tower will also include computer stations that are designated for patients and families.

More Space for Several Patient Care Units

  • Shady Grove’s new tower will provide new and expanded space for several patient care units, including oncology, maternity, orthopedics, medicine and pre/post surgical patients.
  • These units will be staffed by care providers that are specially trained to provide the best care for patients in the specific area.
  • The tower’s first floor consists of a 100,000 square foot Surgical Services Department for inpatient and outpatient cases.  The new surgical area, which is the largest in Montgomery County, will feature 16 new operating rooms.  Special features of the new unit include
    • Private consultation rooms that provide a space for sensitive discussions between families and physicians,
    • Privacy provided by walls between each patient bay in the pre-operative holding area,
    • New technology such as flat screen monitors and ceiling mounted equipment booms in each room,
    • Ability to accommodate barriatric patients through specialized equipment and specially trained staff,
    • Ability to project surgical images onto flat screen monitors in larger OR’s—an option that is beneficial in sensitive surgical cases.
  • Twelve of the new operating rooms in Shady Grove’s new surgical area will be 475 square feet and four will be 675 square feet.
  • All of the new operating rooms will include fiber-optic data lines, which allow the rooms to include the latest technology in surgical equipment.  In addition, the rooms will be set up to mirror each other so that physicians and staff always know where to find equipment and supplies.  This provides the safest environment for surgical patients and staff.
  • When hospital renovations are completed, Shady Grove’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is level 3B, will have 32-38 bassinettes, depending on the acuity of the unit’s patients at any given time.  Families with critically ill babies will have more space to receive high-level specialized care within the community.
